Arbroath recently celebrated the completion of a transformative active travel project aimed at improving mobility for residents and visitors alike. The initiative, known as 'Arbroath A Place for Everyone', was launched by the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust in collaboration with Angus Council. This project has introduced new and upgraded paths, crossings, and public spaces, making it easier and safer for people to walk, wheel, and cycle throughout the town without relying on cars. The funding for this project came from the Scottish Government-backed Places for Everyone programme, highlighting the commitment to sustainable travel options in Arbroath. The new routes are designed to enhance access to local businesses, green spaces, and public transport, thereby promoting a healthier lifestyle and reducing carbon emissions. Communities Convener Cllr Tommy Stewart emphasized the project's alignment with local and national priorities, including climate change, health promotion, and town center regeneration. The project not only aims to improve social and environmental conditions but also provides a significant economic boost, contributing over £5.6 million to the local economy. The groundwork for this initiative began in 2015, with community input shaping the plans. After securing funding in 2019, the collaborative efforts of Angus Council, Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, and local stakeholders have led to the successful delivery of this long-awaited project. Improvements include a new 1.5km route connecting West Links to Arbroath Abbey, upgraded crossings, redesigned junctions, and enhancements to the National Cycle Network Route 1, creating more traffic-free sections through the town.
